Contenda wins at Sydney Showjump Club's Winter Championships

Contenda, ridden by Christopher Burton at Sydney Showjump Club

Contenda, ridden by Christopher Burton has topped off a very successful month by winning at the Sydney Showjump Club's Winter Showjumping Championships. The event was very well attended with many well known riders and horses making the journey to Clarendon to compete in the Championships. In a class with 50 entries, Contenda jumped double clear rounds and was awarded first place with his  jump off round time being 5 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Thank you to Sydney Showjump Club and their sponsors for an excellent event and their generous prizes.

Contenda wins at Quirindi One Day Event

Contenda, ridden by Christopher Burton, has won the Preliminary A class at Quirindi One Day Event. At only his 3rd eventing start Contenda completed the competition with a score of 37.50, 9 points ahead of the nearest competitor. On the first day of the competition, Contenda and Chris were awarded a dressage score of 75% from judge Judy Henry before showjumping clear in the afternoon. On the second day of competition, light rain made the black soil of Quirindi very heavy and slippery and definitely added a degree of difficulty to the cross country phase. Despite this, Contenda and Chris rode clear over the cross country course to finish the event on their dressage score and take out first place. Many thanks to the sponsor of the class "More 4 horses" for their generous support and prizes.

Contenda, ridden by Chris Burton, has finished a close 3rd in his first Preliminary level eventing start. After being awarded a dressage score of 69.55% Contenda and Chris were tied in second place with Positano , ridden by Andrew Haddad. Contenda and Positano then both showjumped clear and completed the cross country course without any penalties. The two horses were separated only by their cross country times with Andrew Haddad and Positano's cross country time being the closest to the optimum time allowed for the course by a few seconds, and hence earning the pair second place. Congratulations to first place getter, Hayley Clark riding the lovely Paris.

Contenda wins at the Gunnedah Showjumping Festival

Gunnedah Showground day 1

The Gunnedah Showjumping Festival consisted of 3 rings running over 3 days of competition. Nearly 200 riders from Queensland and New South Wales made the journey to this well run showjumping festival in the Koala Capital of Australia, Gunnedah. The showground surface was a credit to the commitee and the local community of Gunnedah, who had worked together in the past year to top dress and seed the arena all from donated services and money.

Contenda and Christopher Burton competing in the D Grade Grandprix

Contenda, ridden superbly by Christopher Burton, won the 1.05 - 1.10m class on the Saturday. Due to the large numbers of entries in all the classes, the class extended into the night with the jump off being conducted under lights. Contenda and Chris, unfazed by the fading light and shadows, were the only combination to jump a double clear round. The following day, Contenda and Chris jumped a clear first round in the D Grade Grand Prix, only to drop the last rail in a very fast and tight jump off round. Many thanks to Pryde's Feeds for their generous sponsorship of the 1.10m class.

Contenda, ridden by Chris Burton, jumped a double clear round and then had the fastest time to win the 1.1m class held at Sydney Showjump Club. The class comprised of a large field of around 50 competitors with the minor placings going to Blue Jay, the 5 year old ISS Young Horse Class winner, Tatiana, and Copabella Vegas, all of whom were ridden by Julia Hargreaves.

Quirindi 1 Day Event

Contenda ridden by Christopher Burton during the cross country phrase

Contenda competed in his first 1 day event at Quirindi this weekend. It was a great weekend thanks to the great venue, a very well run event and the large attendance of enthusiastic, friendly competitors.

Contenda had a great start to the weekend on Saturday scoring 73.2% in the dressage, which included 9's for his canter. This was followed by a clear round showjumping in the afternoon. At this stage Contenda was placed third overall.

The cross country was run on Sunday. Contenda really enjoyed this phase and jumped all jumps enthusiastically. Unfortunately, his inexperience at the waterjump resulted in him having 2 refusals on entering the water and was enough to put him out of the placings.

NSW EFA Horse of The Year

Flamboyant progeny again made an impact at the 2010 NSW EFA Horse of the Year Competition.

The Large hack class ( 16hh and over) saw full brothers, Supernatural and Alkyra Flamboyance, go head to head under saddle for the first time. Supernatural, straight from winning Open Hack 16.2hh and over at the 2010 Sydney Royal and the 2010 Grand National Runner Up Large Hack, continued his winning streak by adding EA NSW Large Hack of the year to his ever growing resume.

Alkyra Flamboyance was gelded only 5 months ago and at only his second show under saddle put in an impressive performance to make the top 10.

Alkyra Elegance looked stunning and worked very well but was very unlucky in the final round. Points from the 3 judges placed Alkyra Elegance equal 2nd with Delta Dark Prince but after a judges conference the runner up award was given to Delta Dark Prince.

Supernatural (pictured above), by Flamboyant, was a convincing winner at the 2010 Sydney Royal Easter Show Large Hack 16.2 hh and over class. Judge, Rebecca Farrow, rewarded well conformed and well presented horses that worked well on the day. The 2nd and 3rd placing horses were INXS and Rumble.

Alkyra Elegance, also by Flamboyant, placed third to the Concerto and Crewe in a strong Open Small Hack Class (15hh and n.e 15.2hh). Alkyra Elegance was also named runner up in the prestigious Crane Trophy to the stunning mare "Magnifique". For the first time the height restriction for the Crane Trophy was changed from 14.2 - 15.2hh to 15 - 16hh.

Open Event Horse Challenge

Sydney Royal never fails to deliver both top level horses and riders, and this year was no exception. The tightly contested Open Event Horse Challenge saw many well seasoned and impressive 2 and 3 star event horses fight for the title. A well deserved win went to Christopher Burton riding Kinnordy Rivaldo owned by himself and Tina Stafford. Contenda, in his first "eventing" start, did not place but his promising jumping skills did not go unnoticed. See Horse Deals Gallery for full results and more photos of Contenda and others competing in the Event Horse Challenge.

Flamboyant Progeny Shine at the 2010 Grand National

Flamboyant progeny shone at the 2010 Grand National Hack Show held at SEIC this year. The Grand National represents the creme de la creme in the show world. Every horse has won either Champion or Reserve Champion from a Royal Show or select qualifying show to even be invited to contest for the title of Grand National Champion Hack.

This year the prestigious title of Runner Up Grand National Champion in both the small and large hack classes was taken out by 2 Flamboyant progeny, Alkyra Elegance (small hack) and Supernatural (large hack). Congratulations to all connected to these two horses for an outstanding achievement.

Contenda training for the Event Horse Challenge at Sydney Royal

Contenda has been back in training with Christopher Burton since February 2010. After only 2 weeks back in work, Contenda and Chris had a double clear round showjumping in the 1.10m class at Nowra Agricultural Show.

Contenda and Chris will next be able to be seen competing in the Open Event Horse Challenge at Sydney Royal Easter Show on Easter Sunday. The Event Horse Challenge is the ultimate challenge for horses, with marks being awarded for dressage, showjumping, conformation and also a mark reflecting the horses potential to negotiate a cross country course.
